From as far back as the earliest known civilizations, man has always sought to place religious or spiritual tattoos on his body. Religious tattoos or spiritual tattoos were done then, and still are today, to honor any important figure associated with their religion. Even people who are not religious or spiritual have displayed religious or spiritual tattoos. Of all the religious tattoos that are done, the crucifix is easily the most popular of them all.
Recognized by many of the peoples of this world, the crucifix is one of those religious and spiritual symbols that conjure up some very powerful images and emotions. This is true of people who are Christians and those who are non Christians. Tattoos of the crucifix are of varying designs and many will have an image of Jesus Christ on the cross. There are some others that will show just the crucifix and a crown of thorns. Another variation is the crossed nails, depicting the nails that were used in the crucifixion of Jesus.
Most of the persons who have chosen a spiritual tattoo or a religious tattoo have done so for a number of reasons. For a good amount of these people it is the warm memories of things past, during a religious period of their lives. Others seek to bring back a reverend moment into their lives.
One of the more common reasons for having a spiritual tattoo or a religious tattoo is, as a sign of respect, although it may not represent the wearers’ own faith. There is however many persons who display a number of different religious and spiritual tattoo designs, who have no religious or spiritual association with them and have given these religious icons different meanings. You will find this especially with gangs, and for them it is in some ways to done to signify that they are under the protection of a higher power. Others use a religious tattoo or a spiritual tattoo to show that they are members of the gang for life.
There are also those who are very religious and getting a religious tattoo in an effort to display their profound belief. These people are so into their faith that they will discuss it and let everyone know about it at any moment. They love their faith; therefore a religious tattoo is an effective extension of that faith in their eyes. Their faith may be so deep that they would place a religious tattoo on their body that totally covers it.
What is also very common is the use of religious and spiritual tattoos along with contemporary designs. Many people seem to want to integrate a religious symbol with another design or a design of their own creation. This way they will have created something very unique to them and many see it as their own religious statement.
Many of the tattoo shops across the country have seen persons regularly ask to have different religious tattoos placed on their bodies. This is a testament to the popularity and the profound meanings that religious and spiritual tattoos have for people.
